Winter Bloom Pattern 1 is part of a festive winter pattern set. It doesn't matter how you celebrate the winter holidays; this geometric pattern set can add festive cheer to any of your holiday decor. The Winter Bloom patterns look great on table linens, pillow covers, sweaters, tree skirts, and more.

This tutorial walks you through all the steps and techniques I used to stitch this pattern. The information in this tutorial is merely a suggestion. There is no right or wrong way to stitch this pattern, so relax and have fun!

Make it your own!

All of the winter bloom patterns look great in red and green, but you can make them shine with just about any thread combination.

Tools and Supplies

To complete this project, you will need the Winter Bloom Pattern (available below) and the following supplies. You can use the supplies you have on hand, or you can check out my kits and supply bundles.

  • Cotton and linen are both excellent choices for this pattern, but you don’t have to buy new fabric. Experimenting with repurposed items can breathe new life into something old. Dish towels, cloth napkins, pillow covers, and clothing all make great canvases for stitching. If you find a fabric you love but it is too thin or sheer, you can always layer it or use an embroidery stabilizer.

When cutting fabric for an embroidery project, always allow at least an extra inch around the hoop. For instance, if you are using a 6-inch diameter hoop, ensure your fabric measures at least 8 inches by 8 inches. Fabric that is cut too small will be more difficult to hoop and may not remain taut within the hoop.

  • One good, sharp scissors is all you need. However, having fabric scissors and a small pair of scissors or snips for thread is helpful.

Pinking shears are also helpful for keeping fabric edges from fraying while you stitch.

  • Having an iron is helpful when doing hand embroidery. It's important to begin with clean, wrinkle-free fabric. I also like to give my finished embroidery a light pressing.

Stitches Used

Stem Stitch

Start on the back side of the fabric, bring your needle up through the fabric at 1, then down through at 2. Then, holding your first stitch to the side slightly, bring your needle up at 3, being careful not to pierce the first stitch. Then go down at 4 to make your next stitch. Your stitches will overlap slightly. Stay consistent by always bringing your needle up on the same side of the stitch.

Split Stitch

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

French Knot

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Smyrna or Double Cross Stitch

The Smyrna Cross Stitch looks similar to the Eyelet Stitch, but instead of a hole in the center, the thread runs the full length, forming an X over a +.

Start on the back side of the fabric and bring your needle up through the fabric at 1 then down through at 2. Bring your needle up through at 3 and back down at 4. Continue around.

Eyelet or Star Stitch

• A - Center Ring: Green / 2 Strands / Split Stitch

• B - Teardrop Petal, every other petal: Red / 4 Strands / Stem Stitch

• C - Teardrop Petal, every other petal: Dark Red / 4 Strands / Stem Stitch

• D - Dots: Ecru / 2 Strands / French Knots or Beads

• E - Stars: 988 / 3 Strands / Eyelet - Start Stitch or Smyrna Cross Stitch
